Peace and serenity at HDI's memorial garden
Gathered at Hartford Distributors, Inc., on Aug. 3, several hundred people – employees, former employees, their families, police officers, company officials and local dignitaries – remembered the victims of last year’s workplace shooting during the official dedication of a memorial sculpture garden.
The garden is a cluster of sculptures commissioned by the Manchester Rotary Club. It memorializes the late William Ackerman, union president Bryan Cirigliano, Francis Fazio, Sr., Louis Felder, Victor James, Edwin Kennison, Craig Pepin and Doug Scruton.
Chapel Road in Manchester – just over the South Windsor town line – was the scene of a workplace nightmare on Aug. 3, 2010. Teams of police and first responders from around the region quickly arrived to find a shooting spree in progress. The massacre ended with nine people dead, including the gunman, former HDI truck driver Omar Thornton, who took his own life.
At the memorial dedication, there was a sense of peace among HDI employees and families of victims. The garden to honor the memories of the eight victims who lost their lives is neatly tucked into a forested area on the HDI property. HDI is a private, family-owned and operated beer distribution company. It recently added to its plant floor and acquired Franklin Distributors, to expand its territory.
In addition to those who died, others were shot and wounded, but survived to pay their respects to former coworkers' families. Employees and company officers at the ceremony described everyone at HDI as an extended family.
Some said the remembrance brought back horrific memories of the day of the tragedy.
Noting that in war, a unit is trained to face danger and even death, Glenn Barksdale, the current shop steward for Local 1035, said, “But we were just employees going to work, helping each other. We were not prepared for this.”
Even police officers admitted that the day came back to mind as if it were just yesterday, not a year ago.
Ross Hollander, CEO of HDI, said the employees and the families of the victims have kept the company together since the tragedy.
Brilliant blue skies, emerald green lawns, and a white tent where a buffet breakfast was served contrasted with the darkness of the forest now twinkling with eight silver-toned sculptures. The artwork resembles towers of stacked silver boxes; one tower for each of the eight victims, all connected with a wire cable at the top.

In October last year I interviewed Peter Elliott and Pauline Fowler of Animated Extras, who are credited on the movie as the primate choreographer and sculptor of the "re-enactment unit" (animated sculptures and chimp suits), respectively.

The artwork resembles towers of stacked silver boxes; one tower for each of the eight victims, all connected with a wire cable at the top. Each of the sculptures is engraved with the name of the person it honors, and each features a unique inscription.
Boycott proponents may face prosecution | J-Wire
“The Australian” reports that the Australian Competition and Consumers Commission will consider injunction relief and damages after 19 people were arrested following an ugly clash between police and protesters outside the Max Brenner store in Melbourne’s CBD on July 1″.
Minister for Consumer Affairs Michael O’Brien has asked the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to examine whether BDS campaigners are in breach of Commonwealth law by engaging in secondary boycotts for the purpose of causing substantial loss or damage to Max Brenner’s business. The protesters have gathered outside Max Brenner stores on several occasions, preventing potential customers from entering the store.
The President of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry Dr Danny Lamm today said: “We applaud the Victorian Government for having the moral fibre to stand up to the immoral and illegal BDS campaign.
Whilst the right to engage in peaceful protest is sacrosanct, anyone seeking to exercise that right must do so within the law.
The local businesses which have been targeted by BDS protesters all operate in accordance with Australian law, and the protesters must do likewise. If the protesters transgress the law, they should be punished with the same severity as any business that breaks the law.”
Dr Lamm accused the protesters of being “highly selective” about the Israeli products which they have targeted. “The BDS organizers will call for a boycott of certain Israeli cosmetics and chocolate products. But they wouldn’t dream of telling you not to use Windows operating systems developed by Microsoft Israel, or mobile phone technology that was refined in Israel by Motorola, or Israeli medical innovations,” Dr Lamm said. “They are not prepared to make any personal sacrifices. It’s a ‘Claytons’ boycott”, he concluded. “The real agenda is to defame Israel, as their slogans reveal”.
Asked whether the ECAJ would like to see the Federal government and other State governments join with Victoria in referring the major BDS organizations to the ACCC, Dr Lamm answered, “Definitely. A strong bipartisan voice saying ‘No’ to BDS will reflect the basic sentiment of most Australians that the bitterness and complexity of foreign conflicts should be kept out of our peaceful country”.
The Jewish Community of Victoria also expressed its support for the Victorian Coalition Government’s call for a probe into the legality of the BDS demonstrations.
