Charach Gallery Offers Young Artists a Chance to Thrive
Twenty years ago, I dreamed of making a living by selling my paintings in an art gallery. Choosing to become an art teacher and raising an active child alone ended up prohibiting such an adventurous thought from coming to fruition. My main responsibility was to my daughter and to my career as a public school teacher.
Also 20 years ago, a dream was materializing for the Charach family — a dream to commemorate the brief life of their beloved daughter, Janice. Janice was an artist who died at age 39 of lymphoma. Her parents, Manny and Natalie Charach, endowed the funds to build an art gallery within the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield to honor her spirit and to provide young artists with a beautiful space in which to exhibit their talents.
Terri Stearn was just such a young artist. Now she’s the director of the gallery and a juror of the gallery's 20th -anniversary exhibit, which closes July 24. Stearn said 70 artists from the gallery’s history submitted more than 150 pieces of new work for the show.
Lesley Serri is one of those artists. She now lives and works as a freelance artist in Kalamazoo, where she presently has a painting on display at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts .
The pieces that were juried into this show represent her diversity. There are three raku masks and one multimedia painting. The painting, Escape of Time, is a beautiful commentary on what makes us tick. Though the work is small in size, it is full of symbolism best left to the viewer to interpret.
Serri created the three stoneware masks at the KIA on a scholarship. The name raku comes from the firing process used to make them. Although only three are on display in this exhibit, Serri created 12 all together.
The inspiration for their design came from aboriginal ritual tattooing of the Mokus of Hawaii, she said. The phases of the moon inspired the masks' organic shapes, she said, and the subjects are anthromorphic by nature, but said she let the firing process decide much about the finished product.
“It is a delicate balance between controlling your product and what comes out of the firing," Serri said. "I believe in letting the clay and the fire do what it does best, and I use my knowledge of the process to my advantage, letting what happens happen.”
And so, in the strange way that the planet organically ticks time by, I continued to create my own work while still raising my child and performing my duties to my classroom and my community. Eventually, I, too, found a delicate balance over the control and timetable of my life.

This production only required the help of two students. One played an astronaut and the other recorded the voice of the animated moon (using a program called CrazyTalk). I simply took green cloth and covered the classroom door with it. Each clip was completed in one attempt and took fewer than ten minutes. We recorded the audio for the moon in a special area in a few minutes. One of my talented students helped put the video together.
New Moon — A girl earns a new job . . .
Waxing Crescent — where she is asked to wax the crescent.
First Quarter — Her boss is pleased so she earns her first quarter.
Waxing Gibbous — Her next job is to wax the gibbous.
Full Moon — Again, the boss is pleased, so she earns her first full paycheck.
Waning Gibbous — Then she gets lazy. She begins to wane the gibbous.
Last Quarter — So the boss says, "You're fired. This is your last quarter. Finish the job and leave."
Waning Crescent — She wanes the crescent before leaving . . .
New Moon — to find a new job.
My students were mesmerized by this simple gadget, and of course, everyone wanted to try it out. The cool name — "moon phase transporter" — counts. One of my students came up with it, and it has stuck with me. To build one of your own, you need these materials:
~8 ping-pong balls.
~A large foam poster-board.
~8 medium screws.
~A box cutter.
~Strong flashlight (to represent the sun).
~The "sun" is optional, but can be placed on a ruler.
I love creating content-specific videos with my students because I can continue to use them for years to come. In addition, it is sweet to hear the young voices of people who are now grown and driving around town. See a video my class created explaining the phases of the moon and sharing information they learned while researching. I chuckle each time the "floating" cookie roams through one of the scenes. Good stuff.
