Back To School: Farmersville High School is Building Futures

Farmersville High School is taking the next step in building better futures for its students.

At its July 12 meeting, the Farmersville Unified School Board approved education specifications for a Vocational Education Wing at the high school. The vote was significant step to expand the school’s building trades and ag mechanics courses which are providing opportunities for students to find professional employment as graduating seniors. “Not everyone wants to go to college,” Jones said. “Some want to go into the workforce, others need to work to help their families and some are interested in learning a trade.”

FHS is already at the forefront of voc ed courses that offer an immediate transition into the workforce. Principal Ernie Flores said FHS started its carpentry program last fall with 25 students. With the help of Randy Wallace, Project Director for the School-to-Career program with the Tulare County Office of Education, Flores said the school found grant money to supply the students with tools, tool boxes, tool belts and steel-toed work boots. Wallace also put the school in touch with the Carpenters Union Local 1109 in Visalia. Not only did the partnership connect the program with its instructor, Dennis Clark, it also provided a conduit to a career. The students who completed all the coursework and testing would graduate Farmersville High School as pre-apprentice, allowing them to start working as in a formal apprenticeship and make an excellent wage right out of high school through the union.
