Love Romeo Juliet Essay

Delirium by Lauren Oliver Q&A!

What if love were a disease? What if you had to undergo a 'procedure' to remove it from your life? What if you couldn't feel pain, anguish or happiness anymore? Would life be better? Or much worse? These are the questions Lena must ask, desperately ask, in Lauren Oliver's, Delirium. We did a complete review of the book HERE if you want to find out more.

Personally we're glad there's still love in our world because we can declare: WE LOVE Lauren Oliver's book, Delirium! We just HAD to talk to Lauren herself, find out what her inspiration was and see if we could get any gossip on the next book in the series, Pandemonium...

Where did the idea for Delirium come from?

The idea for Delirium came from an essay I read by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, in which he wrote that all great books were about love or death. The next day I was thinking about that quote--particularly about how and in what form a modern love story could be told--while I was on the treadmill at the gym. I was simultaneously watching a news story about a flu outbreak that had everyone freaking out about the possibility of a pandemic, and I was kind of marveling that people so easily go into panics about reports of these diseases, and at some point the two trains of thought--love, and disease--just sort of combined in my head. You work very hard to show us all of the different emotions Lena goes through and yet you never lose the story's pace and action - when writing how do you strike the balance between the inner and outer world?

That's a huge challenge, and I'm certainly not sure I always do it successfully, especially at first go. My tendency is actually to focus much more on interiority--I'm a very character-driven writer--so to counteract this, I spend a lot of time outlining my books before writing, so I can be assured that there is some outer framework on which to build. Otherwise I could easily write 800 page character explorations. And of course, my editor is critical in helping me find this balance during revisions .

You seem to be an expert on love - the good and the bad – any particular experiences from your own life you drew on?

Oh, dear. All of my experiences influenced me in some way. I certainly drew on my memories of what it felt like to fall in love for the very first time, both the terror and the exhilaration of it; and DELIRIUM is in many ways an exploration of questions I've asked myself, after loss or heartbreak, about the value of some of our most intense and passionate feelings.
