Contrary to claims by Government that the Embraer 190 aircraft is being acquired as a “Strategic Airlift Aircraft” to “significantly enhance the operations of the Ghana Armed Forces, especially in its peacekeeping operations,” the New Statesman can reveal that the Embraer 190 is not built to airlift military personnel. It is a commercial aircraft, pure and simple. On Thursday, 23rd April 2009, barely 2 months after President Mills had stated in his first state of the nation address that “we will review the decision to purchase two executive presidential aircrafts because Ghana simply cannot afford the expenditure at this time”, representatives from Embraer, led by Antonio Neubarth flew to Accra to make a presentation to Vice President John Mahama, Lt Gen JH Smith and the Military High Command for the purchase of the Embraer 190. At that time, Embraer was not a manufacturer of any military transport aircraft. A week prior to the presentation made by Embraer to Ghanaian officials, however, Embraer had signed a contract with the Brazilian Air Force to begin the production of the KC-390 military transport program, an aircraft specifically designed to serve as a military transport aircraft, serving as a troop carrier and effective cargo and tanker aircraft and estimated at a fully-kitted, total flat cost of $50 million per unit. The EMBRAER 190 is the third of the brand-new four-member Embraer E-Jets family of commercial aircraft that entered service in August 2005. The jet may be configured in one or two classes, seating 98 to 114 passengers in a comfortable four-abreast (2-2), no-middle-seat, configuration, and can fly up to 2,400 nautical miles (4,450 kilometers) nonstop. Civil operators of the Embraer 190 include Air Canada with 15 aircrafts, JetBlue Airways with 47 aircrafts, KLM Cityhopper with 17, AeroMéxico Connect 8, Azul Brazilian Airlines, 30, and Kenya Airways with 1 aircraft (2 firm orders pending). Other orders include 15 aircraft for US Airways, and 15 aircrafts for Austral Líneas Aéreas (Argentina), all acquired for commercial flights.

Embraer   a Brazilian manufacturing company  with the light jets  Phenom 100 and Phenom 300-with the slogan:”Made in the USA” and the large executive jet recently opened  the Melbourne International Airpor,Melbourne,Florida,of its first US-based factory, aviation observers wondering whether,Embraer,will be marketing its phenom range of light jets to be built there.

The plan to build the 8000-square foot (7432 square metre) assembly hangar and paint shop plant for Phenom business jets was originally announced shortly after the Phenom 300 prototype started flying in May 2008.

The new hangar and modern paint shop facility is dedicated to the executive jet business in the company’s largest market, where it will begin operations with the production of the Phenom 100 entry level executive jet. About 200 people will work there. The company will also conduct flight testing and do delivery preparation at the Melbourne facility.

A second construction phase for the company’s customer centre has already begun. At this facility, customers will be able to design the interiors of their Phenom, Legacy and Lineage executive jets with the use of high-end 3D visualization technology, supported by a showroom with a vast collection of interior finishing materials. It is scheduled to be completed by the time Embraer delivers the first Phenom 100 assembled at the facility in the fourth quarter of this year.

Full production, about eight aircraft a month, should occur sometime next year. The new plant is designed to build up to 100 entry-level jets a year. The plan is to build a single aircraft in expansion, but Embraer has the land and Melbourne has the skilled workforce to support that expansion. Last Year, Embraer produced and delivered 126 Phenom jets.

Embraer may not be finished building US factories, it was learned last month. The company has announced that it would partner with Sierra Nevada to assemble Super Tucano light attack aircraft in Jacksonville, Florida, if it wins a $ 950-million contract with the USA Air Force.

It is competing with Hawker Beech crafts AT-6 for the contract, which will initially supply about 35 single-engine turboprops capable of carrying a wide variety of weapons, including precision guided stores.
