Curb appeal: Porches, decks add pizzazz to any home

They are less maintenance and have more consistency in color and looks, VanWert said.

But they are more expensive, often costing about twice what wood products cost.

And VanWert is not convinced of their longevity.

“They haven’t been out long enough to prove to anybody that they are going to last 50 years,” he said.

VanWert recently measured a porch for new wood decking. The house, located in downtown Midland, is more than 100 years old, with 1 by 4-inch fir porch decking. The home’s owner wants the house to keep its original charm and historic qualities, so the porch will be redecked with wood.

“I love the nature of wood,” VanWert said. “Wood has proven itself.”

Composite decking is most commonly made from wood processed into a flour-like material that is combined with plastic, usually from recycled pop bottles. Because of its wood pulp content, composite decking can absorb substances such as grease and oil and become stained.

Vinyl decking is actually made from pure vinyl and contains no wood. Because it has no wood it can be wiped clean without penetration of stain-causing agents.

As for railings and balustrades, there is an endless array of designs in wood, vinyl and wrought iron. Rails can also be done with glass panels and stainless steel cables.
