Brig. Gen. Frederick J. Johnson Inspired 2011 Army ROTC Ball

Brig. Gen. Frederick J. Johnson (retired) received the honor of being inducted into the 2011 South Carolina State Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) Hall of Fame Class. Johnson's message motivated cadets to strive for greatness and to be an example for others to emulate, said Lt. Col. Theopia Deas, assistant professor of military science at South Carolina State University.

SC State’s Army ROTC Program hosted the 2011 Spring Army ROTC Ball on Friday, April 15.  The event took place at the K.W. Green Student Center’s Bulldog Lounge on the campus of SC State University.  The theme for this year’s annual event wass “Continuing the Legacy of Leadership Excellence.” 

With more than 2035 minority officers and 14 general officers in the U.S. Army, SC State University’s Army ROTC Program continues to build upon its legacy of commitment to service and answering the call of duty, the university said.

SC State University’s Department of Military Science’s Army ROTC Program hosted the 32nd annual Army ROTC Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony also on Friday, April 15.

Johnson was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve in l976 upon receiving a bachelor’s degree in music education from South Carolina State University.  He also earned a master’s degree in strategic studies from the United States Army War College.

After completing the Armor’s Officer Basic Course, he served as a platoon leader, scout platoon leader, executive officer and troop commander for various units in Korea and Fort Knox, Ky. 

He commanded a recruiting company in N.Y. and served as the manpower analysis officer and personnel officer for the 35th Signal Brigade (Airborne), 18th Airborne Corps.  In 1990, brigadier general Johnson transitioned into the Alabama Army National Guard where he served in numerous staff level positions in operations, training and intelligence.

Upon his promotion to brigadier general, he was assigned as the assistant adjutant general, Army Forces Headquarters and the commanding general of the 62nd Troop Command of the Alabama National Guard.
