Hamilton's multicultural Mardi Gras

Kelena Joseph was Mardi Gras queen of the Bay Street railway bridge.

All of 2 ½ years old, the Hamilton toddler jumped up and danced in and out of the Hamilton Mardi Gras parade Saturday morning, shaking it with the best of the professionals.

Dancers festooned in feathers dragging huge colourful butterfly-like trailing costumes stopped to hug and high-five the child.

Decked out in her Trinidadian flag and a feathered carnival hat her dad bought her at Toronto's Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival, Kelena danced with delight.

She even got an invite from someone with the extravagant Toronto Mas In Atlantis ocean themed five-float string to come to Toronto next year and dance.

Not a dancer or band went by on their way to Hamilton's 10th anniversary edition of Mardi Gras who didn't smile and wave for the little girl and she loved it.

So did her mom and dad, Michelle and Leslie, who says she has rhythm in her genes from his native Trinidad.

Byron Alexander, entertainment co-ordinator for the Mardi Gras, said organizers are very pleased with how well everything went.

With close to 1,000 participants in the parade, this year's version was “one of the best ever,” he said.

President and co-founder Bernadette Ling said the Mardi Gras strives for a true multicultural flavour for the two-day affair — Friday night featured a Cultural Extravaganza with various bands and Saturday a Soca Explosion.

There are so many different cultural groups in Hamilton who celebrate at different times that it would be “wonderful” for them to come together and celebrate each other, she said.

“That is what I want to accomplish.”

There were six Mas bands in the parade and bands from the Filipino, Nigerian, Chinese, and Spanish communities as well as the Hamilton Youth Steel Band.

“This is the direction we want to go,” said Alexander. “We want a true, multicultural festival that is Hamilton.”

Even the rain Saturday afternoon helped the Mardi Gras, he said, keeping the dust down afterwards as the crowd danced.

As the three-hour parade wound from City Hall down Bay Street to Bayfront Park for “a cultural explosion” and day-long festival, Leslie said he was pleased to see so many different cultures represented.

“That is what we like about this festival,” he said. “It is a chance to learn this about others and through understanding we all do better together.

What is the route ahead? <br/ >Burlington Transit hosting drop-in ...

Burlington Transit staff are starting to develop “The Route Ahead”, a master plan for transit in Burlington. They’re reviewing BT’s current conventional services and looking ahead to the future of Burlingon Transit from 2012 to 2021 .

The master plan will set out ways to to significantly increase the number of people using transit, improve the overall efficiency and effectiveness of transit service, develop technology and marketing plans and review options for the downtown terminal. The Route Ahead will also include a strategy to implement the various recommendations of the master plan over ten years.

As a key component of this study, staff intend to consult with passengers, community groups and organizations and the public at large to determine public attitudes toward Burlington Transit and gain obtain input on strategic directions.

To start off, Burlington Transit is hosting two “Let’s Talk Transit” drop-in centres on Wednesday, August 24 . During these informal sessions, members of the study team listen to your ideas and comments about Burlington Transit and answer your questions. Your input will help guide them in planning the study. Both sessions include one hour of formal deputations, where members of the public can make their opinions heard. A member of the consulting team will also be available for one-on-one interaction and discussions.

In the afternoon , the session takes place at:

BT will conduct focus groups with residents and stakeholders that have an interest in transit services in September and October on the overall vision for Burlington Transit, key markets for increasing the numbers of riders and strategic directions for moving forward.

In mid-September, transit users can complete a survey on buses that will determine key information on demographics, trip characteristics and attitudes on public transit.

In late fall BT will host a public information centre for staff to present the results of consulting with the public, what the study found and to get feedback before finalizing study recommendations.
