How to look the part on a side saddle

Beautiful ladies, fine horses, glamorous outfits -- it's no wonder riding side saddle is back in vogue. Once on the verge of being consigned to the history books, side saddle is making a big comeback and will feature in a special demonstration at the RDS Failte Ireland Dublin Horse Show this week.

The Concours d'Elegance -- competition of elegance -- will feature 14 horses and riders in traditional side saddle turnout, along with a commentary explaining the art of side saddle.

Kalindi Lawrence, from the Side Saddle Association of Ireland, says the Concours will take place on Thursday, which is very appropriate as it is also Blossom Hill Ladies' Day.

In fact, ladies' day originated from the fact that it was traditionally the day when the ladies' hunter classes were judged, classes which were always ridden side saddle.

As befits the glamorous sport, the demonstration is being sponsored by fine jewellery makers Boodles, a family owned business that was established over 200 years ago.

"It is Boodles' first time to get involved in this type of event and we feel there is a strong synergy between the style and glamour of Boodles' jewellery and the elegance and skill involved in riding side saddle," says Abby Comyn.

"There is a parallel between the intricate craftsmanship involved in making the side saddle and the design of the habit, and the creation of masterpieces at Boodles."

Each rider will wear a different outfit to illustrate the different styles of traditional side saddle clothing. If you think it was simply a matter of wearing what you like -- think again, because, as Kalindi Lawrence explains, there are strict rules governing side saddle turnout.

Riders generally wear a top hat or bowler, depending on the time of day. Bowlers are worn in the morning or at smaller, more insignificant shows, while top hats are correct for the afternoon and big shows such as the RDS.

Black silk top hats should be no shorter than 4.75 inches or taller than 5.25 inches, depending on the height of the rider and overall picture on the horse. The hat should sit just above eyebrows and be straight and level to the ground when mounted.

A plain cream four-fold silk stock and plain white stock shirt should be worn with a top hat, should be tied tight enough to stay in place, but still be comfortable, and secured by a plain stock pin placed just under the knot when tied. Cream gloves should be worn with a silk hat.

I had a great experience selling my near-new condition Hennig dressage saddle through Fine-Used-Saddles.com a few years back, and I would definitely recommend them if you have a high-end saddle to sell. My saddle was listed on their website within a few days of arriving in Houston, and got a lot of interest very quickly. After a few trials and returns, the Fine-Used-Saddles owner (I forget her name) recommended that I allow her to have the tree widened to a wide (maybe medium-wide) from the medium-narrow to which it had originally been adjusted, for very reasonable price at least by my SoCal standards. I believe that the saddle sold to the next person who took it for a trial. The thing that wasn't so good was that it took about 6 months, a slight price reduction, and a tree adjustment to sell. However, you really can't blame that on Fine-Used-Saddles - these saddles are only worth what a buyer will pay. Anyway, I was really thrilled to not try to figure out how to take payment, how to organize trials and shipping, etc, all of which made the consignment fee of 15% totally worth it to me. Had great luck with them. It did take a little while to put my saddle online even though their agreement says it will be online within 7 days if I remember right. I e-mailed them, and she said they had quite a few saddles arrive all at once. She did get it online within a week after my e-mail though. She always promptly replied to e-mails, and it only took her a few weeks to sell the saddle. All in all, a great experience!
