Late afternoon storm slows Dickinson rush hour traffic

Cars across Dickinson were moving slower than usual as they navigated deep water on a number of streets Friday afternoon and one car could not be seen as it was completely under water.

A woman got out of her car and hopped into another as rain pummeled Dickinson and the Third Avenue underpass, which floods often when heavy rain hits, filled up.

No one was injured, Dickinson Police Department Sgt. Mike Hanel said while blocking the street where the car was submerged.

He said some manhole covers had popped off in the storm, also.

Residents could be seen emptying water from their basements as others stood outside, cameras in hand, to take photos of flooded streets.

The area was under a flash flood warning until 10 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service. Between 2 and 4 inches of rain fell throughout the area and some of the heaviest was in southeast Stark County, between Richardton and Lefor.

The storm also contributed to the closure of both eastbound lanes of Interstate-94 near mile marker 69 for almost an hour when a travel trailer was blown over.

Dickinson resident Blain Stockert was pulling a camper behind his pickup at approximately 10 mph due to heavy winds and rain. The wind picked up the camper and overturned it, but it remained attached to the pickup, according to the North Dakota

Highway Patrol.

There was severe damage to the camper and the hitch on the pickup and it blocked the road. There were no injuries.

In Belfield there were a few cars in water up to their bumpers, said Belfield Police Officer Richard Carney, but no reports of serious accidents or injuries despite flooding in low parts of town.
