Best Movie Ever: Ferris Bueller's Day Off
For a movie about skipping school, Ferris Bueller offers up a lot of wisdom.
In addition to weightier philosophical topics ("Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while you might miss it.") Matthew Broderick has some practical lessons up his sleeve as well. Don't think I wasn't testing out these methods for faking out my parents just days after first seeing this film.
Somewhere in a glass cube in the woods loaded with state of the art technology (like a sleek answering machine!) is a mope feeling sorry for himself.
Would Ferris Bueller have been friends with Cameron Frye if Cameron didn't have access to a car?
Yes, of course he would have - Ferris is friends with everyone! But the hypochondriacal, tightly-wound rich kid with invisible parents is the perfect (and only true) foil for the perfectly in-phase with the Universe force that is Ferris Bueller.
Best: Cameron is so rich he can afford to have the soundtrack of the film sync up with whatever he is thinking so that he can sing along with it. That's how he rolls.
Much of what sets John Hughes' work apart are the quick, observational moments that may not necessarily advance the story, but add a richness and exaggerated verisimilitude to the world of the film.
Nowhere is this more evident than in the absolutely devastating first act take down of the middle class American school system in Ferris Bueller's Day Off the classic that it is, but let's not forget the essence of the character.
Broderick's Bugs Bunny-esque weisenheimer is incapable of downtime - so when waiting for Cameron to show up with a ride he'll make a number of costume changes and entertain the audience with gags. From an audience perspective, we get the feeling he'd be doing this whether "we" were there or not.

The Film
Growing up, I was always a few years too young to watch John Hughes’ teen comedies at the zenith of their popularity. In fact, I hadn’t seen many of these classics until recently. This may be blasphemy, but I just watched Ferris Bueller’s Day Off for the very first time. As much as I wanted to love every second and proclaim John Hughes the second coming, I didn’t have the decades of nostalgia to back up my hopes. Having my own generation of teen comedies that I adore, Ferris Bueller will never be an icon for me, but there are legions of fans that adore this classic with good reason.
The film follows the shenanigans of slick, carefree high school senior Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) when he fakes being sick and takes the day off from school. Ferris is joined by his girlfriend, Sloane (Mia Sara), and his nervous best friend, Cameron (Alan Ruck). Ferris convinces Cameron to let them take out his father’s beloved, ultra-rare Ferrari, and the trio head into Chicago for some good-natured tomfoolery. They con their way into expensive restaurants, see the city sights, and contemplate their post-high school future. Meanwhile, two people are out to catch Ferris in the lie: his jealous, angry sister (Jennifer Grey) and the Dean of Students (Jeffrey Jones) who wants to make an example out of Ferris, especially since the whole school is rallying behind Ferris’ “illness”.
I have always preferred Hughes’ work outside of his teen comedies, such as Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and National Lampoon’s Vacation . For me, these types of films remain more enjoyable outside of the era they were made in. Having said that, Hughes is best known for his teen films, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is one of his iconic achievements. But for new viewers who haven’t watched the film religiously for twenty-five years, how does it fare? That depends. It is absolutely a product of the ‘80s, complete with a cheesy song and dance sequence on a float and Home Alone -style pranks involving audio recordings and jerry-rigged props. The best laughs I had were actually scenes away from Ferris, especially the Dean of Student’s subplot to catch Bueller in his lie. Hughes’ comic timing and musical cues in these moments remains spot-on to this day.
As a hero of the ‘80s, Bueller was as cool as they come, but teens today may feel differently.
