Five charming islands in the sun
PARADISE ON EARTH
Gaya, Sapi, Manukan, Sulug and Mamutik collectively make up the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, but each island has its own charm.
Pulau Gaya
Gaya, the biggest island, resembles a sleeping dog, head on paws, pointing towards the city centre. As I approach from the sea, the tops of giant trees cut star shapes high above the canopy and I imagine this, rather than its size, was why the Bajau people chose the name Gaya, meaning grand or stylish.
All day long, small boats make the short journey from Kota Kinabalu to Gaya. Some carry tourists, others are commuter vessels belonging to the Bajau whose stilted suburb faces the mainland.
On the seaward side, there is a smattering of isolated beaches, each barely a metre wide as the island is mostly ringed with rocks.
Gaya has private five-star resorts and while day trips are available for those keen on diving, kayaking and sea life, it's not the place to lie on the beach because the better ones are closed to the public.
But Gaya's dense green heart is ripe for exploring and travellers can join a trek operated from the opulent Bunga Raya Island Resort & Spa. Resident beasties such as pythons, vipers, macaques and Bornean bearded pigs only heighten the sense of adventure.
I'm instructed to look out for all of these creatures by my guide Ednah Robert, a keen naturalist and sportswoman, who works at both Bunga Raya and its sister property Gayana Eco Resort.
It seems the perfect job for the vivacious 35-year-old who leads scuba tours and coconut leaf-weaving workshops when she's not leading the less sure-footed through what is some of our planet's most diverse forest.
Cicadas whirr like industrial-strength sprinklers as we become just another two mammals in an ancient domain of 80m-high trees, palms, rattan and serpents. Flying fox platforms, half-built, will eventually let trekkers sway above the forest floor and a 30m-high suspension bridge canopy walk gives a bird's eye view of the hierarchy of the forest.
Moss and ferns down below, light-blocking palms in the middle and then higher, ancient hardwoods, some ringed by the white vines of an orchid which reputedly shows its yellow, purple and white flower only every seven years.
The jungle echoes with avian activity, from the excited calls of the hornbills to the insistent pecking of a woodpecker. Ednah displays her knack of discerning camouflaged geckos from the mottled trunks.

The pass goes through Von's hands and Lloyd makes the grab. Orton hits Decker on a deep crossing pattern and then connects with Eddie Royal at the sideline. Cassius Vaughn pushes him out of bounds and nearly in my lap. No harm, no foul though.

I work on my lap, going from left to right. My method is to secure the right-hand edge of the fabric under my right leg (or hold it down with a heavy book). I then roll the raw edge of the fabric under with the forefinger and thumb of my left hand,
Kyle finds Royal on a crossing pattern with Goodman defending. Orton makes a low catchable pass to Royal that he drops. Willis makes a diving catch from Tebow. The #2 Defense rotates in for some reps. Tebow wobbles a short pass to Eron Riley that is
Lap Weaving | Arts and Crafts City
I was on the train today going to work in nyc and this chick that was sitting next to me had a baby on her lap and it had a weave! seriously, it was very obviously a weave since the baby had to be a few months old and was drooling All Over the place and had freakin’ hair all over the place. babies that age don’t have hair like that, and i could see the extensions and everything. the baby’s mother didn’t even put it in right. Is this like a new fad within the ghetto hip hop culture? I swear if i see a 5 month old baby with a grillz in its mouth i’ll die of laughter.
LIES! But funny. No one puts a weave on a baby.
