Providence-based film company earns 2 Emmy nods
Gary Glassman is hoping this time is the charm.
His locally based Providence Pictures earned two Emmy nominations in the News & Documentary Emmy Awards for “Building the Great Cathedrals.”
The one-hour film, which Glassman produced, aired last October on PBS’ award-winning “Nova” series. It offered a dazzling view of some of Europe’s great gothic masterpieces as today’s scientists and art historians search for ways to preserve them. Glassman’s wife, Joan Branham, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Art & Art History at Providence College, was one of the art historians who provided expertise for the film.
The documentary is one of four nominees for Outstanding Science and Technology Programming. HBO’s “Google Baby,” Discovery Channel’s “Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking” and Science Channel’s “Creating Synthetic Life” are the other nominees.
John Chater, Jeremiah Crowell, Mathieu Czernichow, Mark Daniels and John Hazzard, directors of photography on “Cathedrals,” are nominees for Outstanding Cinematography — News Coverage/Documentaries. Their competition in the category consists of two National Geographic Channel shows, one from airshowbuzz.com and a “60 Minutes” segment.
In each case, Glassman faces high-powered company.
Glassman has won numerous awards for his earlier films, including a Writer’s Guild Award and Cine Golden Eagle for “Secrets of the Parthenon,” a 2008 “Nova” documentary that also received an Emmy nomination.
Upcoming Providence Pictures productions include “Forensics on Trial” to air on “Nova” this upcoming season and four more “architectural” documentaries capitalizing on the success of “Cathedrals” and “Parthenon.”
The 32nd Emmys will be awarded Monday, Sept. 26, in a ceremony in New York City.
