Gem of the Week: Forget 8 Glasses of Water a Day
.McCartney took on medical claims disseminated by Hydration for Health, a water-pushing health organization created by the company that owns Volvic and Evian. McCartney wrote that she did not see any high-quality scientific literature provided by Hydration for Health proving drinking so much water was essential. In fact, she found evidence that mental performance suffers when people drink more water than they're thirsty for. "In other words, there is still no evidence that we need to drink more than we naturally want, and there may be unintended harms from an enforcement to drink more water," McCartney wrote.
While McCartney didn't see evidence backing up the 2-liter-a-day rule, she did see bottled water companies pushing the "water=health" idea to sell more of their products. As McCartney wrote on her blog : "The bottled water industry is pushing the idea that we should drink more than we normally would with the promise of health benefits, and I don’t think there are any. That's all. And I would recommend tap rather than bottled water: cheaper, and far better for environment." The bottled water companies were not happy with McCartney's attitude. In response, the European Federation of Bottled Waters wrote a letter to BMJ about McCartney's article and cited a recommendation that "at least two liters of water should be consumed per day."
The British National Health Service still recommends that everyone drink "six to eight glasses" a day, but in the US, the Mayo Clinic's site says that the eight eight-ounce glasses of water a day "isn't really supported by scientific evidence" and that "if you drink enough fluid so that you rarely feel thirsty" and produce enough clear or light yellow urine a day, you should be fine.

For many years, people have been told they should drink eight eight-ounce glasses of water a day. That's 64 ounces, or nearly 2 liters. This week, Scottish practitioner Margaret McCartney is calling it "thoroughly debunked nonsense" in the current
Subtract post-run weight from pre-run weight and convert to ounces (one pound = 16 ounces) and add that number to how many ounces of water you consumed during workout. That gives you the amount to rehydrate with or to take in during workout.

She says a ratio of 500-700 milligrams of sodium per liter of fluid is recommended. "Unless you are exercising for greater than four to five hours, replacing sodium is not necessary, as long as you follow a normal diet which includes enough sodium,
Time to pick my comics. » Darktouch
I don’t know if you’ve been paying attention but we’re looking at a relaunch of “all” of DC Comic’s titles in September so that the digital masses can start buying their digital comics starting at #1. I’m going to keep calling it a relaunch instead of a reboot because I want to believe… eh, who am I kidding we’re totally moving into a new continuity for the majority of the comics that I read. That is anything that isn’t Batman or Green Lantern.
The digital thing doesn’t really impact me as I plan on continuing my weekly trek down to the comic shop but given that pretty much the entirety of my pull list is DC comics this is going to have an effect on what I am getting.
So with the September 2011 Solicits now available, let’s see what has my interest.
Justice League International #1 – I LOVED Justice League: Generation Lost and Booster Gold is my favorite comic character right now. It is a given that this is my number one pick.
Justice League Dark #1 – I was so heart broken when they cancelled Shadowpact. I found my way into the DC Universe via Sandman, Lucifer, and Books of Magic. As well I’m currently reading Zatanna. So yes, I love the magic side of the DC Universe. Another top pick.
Wonder Woman #1 - I love Wonder Woman. A lot of times I lament that she has more potential than actual realization but I remain hopeful. This newest version reads somewhat like a modern day Xena. I don’t think that’s a bad thing.
Animal Man #1 – The first comic series I read regularly was 52. Booster Gold, Rene Montoya, and Animal Man were my favorites in that book. I still haven’t found what they’re doing with Rene but I’m glad to see Buddy has a place in this new order.
DC Universe Presents #1 – I had a lot of fun with the most recent Brave and the Bold (non-for-kids version) where it was a long running story with a team up of two characters each comic. I don’t know that this will be like that but the chance to just visit in on a variety of characters has its appeal.
Voodoo #1 – Much like DC presents, I’m excited by the prospect of a tour around the new continuity. That said, this seems like it could be the more likely one to get dropped if it turns out to be going no where.
