Sports Unlimited: Circus, Kobe and Jiu Jitsu

Cirque du Soleil, the world-class circus, arts and street entertainment company, has finally enchanted Manila with its captivating show called Varekai.

Varekai is one of Cirque du Soleil’s famous shows all over the world. Rooted from the Romani word meaning wherever, this show is an acrobatic tribute to the nomadic soul. It features elegant costumes, stage designs, music and world-class performances.

True to its art of circus tradition, Cirque du Soleil travels the world through a mobile village. Here, the acrobats not only perform each night but this is also their refuge to live their normal life.

Dyan and Matthew were lucky enough to visit the stage upclose before the show started. Without their make-ups and costumes on, they met this group of former Olympians, called the Russian swingers, practice their acts.

One of the show’s main highlights is the Russian Swing act where acrobats are hurled high from one moving swing to another. Dyan may not be an acrobat but she was game to join the elite Cirque du Soleil group.

The Russian swingers first taught Dyan how to do their moves. Then, it was her turn. Stepping on the Russian swing was scary. Coach Sergey told Dyan to get comfortable first with the swing. With a couple of more swings, Dyan hurled to the other side but she found herself back on the floor.

The acrobats cheered Dyan. They told her to try it again. Sergey gave her a couple of pointers. After a few swings, she jumped her leap of faith with success.

Dyan felt that she had to try it one more time. This time, Sergey told her to use the power of the swing. For Dyan, it was pure adrenaline rush when she landed to the other side.

These acrobats are indeed world-class artists. They’re not only dedicated to improve their craft but to also spread the magic of circus all over the world.

Jiu-jitsu fighters flocked to Mall of Asia for this year's edition of the Pan-Asian Jiu-Jitsu Gi and No Gi International Tournament.

Fighters from Malaysia Hong Kong, Guam, Singapore and Vietnam came to test their mettle against our Pinoy jiu-jitsu fighters.

Fighters, from beginners to elite level, took to the mats and fought for honors in different weight classes. This tournament is the biggest jiu-jitsu event in the country each year, attracting foreign fighters to our shores to practice the Brazilian martial art that has seen a phenomenal growth in popularity around the world.

On Sunday August 21st at 11:00am American Top Team’s head coach and co-founder Ricardo Liborio will be teaching a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)  with Gi Seminar in our school. This is a great opportunity to learn from a legend of our martial art.

No matter your level in BJJ you will be having the privilege to meet and learn from one of the most respectful BJJ Instructors of all times. Master Liborio is an accomplished fighter, trainer and team owner.

We will be innovating in this seminar: Master Liborio not only will be showing techniques but also talking about his life as a martial artist and coach. We are gathering questions from everybody (anonymously). The most relevant questions will be addressed to Master Liborio before the technique part of the seminar.
