Bronze addition for Robert

Most tourists return from Thailand with souvenirs bought from gift shops but Cobar’s Robert Newey returned with a bronze medal won at the International Olympiad of Informatics (IOI).

The 18-year-old, who was described by the Australian Mathematics Trust as the first Australian student to come from such a remote region and win a maths or science Olympiad medal, is ecstatic about his win.

“It’s something to be proud of. Winning a medal at the IOI opens a lot of doors,” he said.

“Google head hunts for people with IOI medals and there are special scholarships available.

“When I started programming in earnest in 2008 I had a go at one of the IOI problems for that year and thought I’d never be able to solve an IOI problem, let alone compete and win a medal in the IOI. It’s really quite amazing now to have done this - my life goal is achieved at 18,” Robert said.

The Cobar High School student joined three other students from Australia to compete against the best informatics students in the world in the two-day contest which included computer programming and solving algorithmic problems.

“The problems focus on two things, being able to come up with an algorithm to solve a problem and then writing a program to do that,” Robert said.

“One of the problems was we were [hypothetically] trapped in a dungeon with an evil overlord who wants to stop you getting out and is able to block off one pathway at a time,” Robert explained to the Cobar Age.

“We had to find some way, some process of decisions, which will definitely get us out in the shortest amount of time, no matter what paths this evil overlord blocks off.”

Before flying to Thailand for the competition Robert and his Australian team mates were involved in a five-day intensive camp designed to help prepare him for the competition.

“At the camp every morning we sat a five-hour exam which had problems that were about the same level of difficulty as we would get in the IOI. It was a big help in training.”

Robert participated in the IOI held in Canada last year where he finished 158th out of 300 competitors in the world.

“I found this year’s competition easier than last year’s, though in Canada there was a higher social aspect as we were staying in university accommodation. In Thailand we were in a five-star resort so we had a lot more room to spread out,” Robert said.

“Thailand is a really weird country.
