Omaha Mother Upset About Lead in Home

Omaha(KPTM) - An Omaha mother is concerned about her newly adopted 1 year-old. She just found out that she has twice the amount of lead in her system then deemed safe by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. See below for more information on the lead contamination "Super Fund."

Children between the ages of 1 and 5 are at the most danger for lead problems. Lead slows down the developmental problem. Heavy exposure to lead can create long-term problems.

Dr. Adi M. Pour of the Douglas County Health Department says, "Sometimes those children are smaller, their speech is developing later, their hearing is developing later, and they do less in school."

One look at the Harper house and no one could see the lead damage. But, the Health Department came out and tested the house and found lead every.

Rene Harper told us that lead was in the walls, the windows, the doors. She even said the garage outside was having lead runoff into their garden. 

"Top to bottom it is a lead hazard," said Harper.

Rene sought help for the lead problem 3 years ago, even before she adopted Novella. She turned to the Environmental Protection Agency and the Health Department.

The EPA tested the Harper's property and found it to be below safety levels. They tested at 292 parts per million. The minimum level for cleaning is 400 ppm.

The Douglas County Health Department told Harper that they could not qualify for help because at that time had no young children.

"As a home owner I think you have the responsibility, and as a family you have the responsibility to keep your home safe for your children."

The Harpers began taking action on their own, spending their free time getting rid of the lead. They figured if no one else would help, they had to take their safety into their own hands.

The Douglas County Health Department is now helping Rene, they will begin given education on how to remove lead paint from their home and how to keep Novella safe.

"Once she got sick then they do come in and help you," said Harper.

Now she wants the system fixed. She wants others to get tested and have their kids tested.
