Kashiwazaki Nuclear Power Plant

Kashiwazaki-Kariwa reactors key to TEPCO

The seven nuclear reactors at Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant in Kashiwazaki and Kariwamura, Niigata Prefecture, are a crucial part of Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s power generating capacity.

The plant's capacity, 8.21 million kilowatts, comprises 13 percent of TEPCO's 65 million kilowatts of total potential power generating capacity.

The potential capacity includes TEPCO's thermal and hydraulic power plants.

The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant's No. 1 reactor was shut down for inspection Saturday for an indefinite period. The Nos. 5 and 6 reactors are scheduled to be shut down for inspection by next March. Depending on circumstances, all seven reactors may be stopped at the same time.

This summer, TEPCO has secured more than 56 million kilowatts of power supply capacity, while the maximum-demand estimate is 55 million kilowatts.

As the government has ordered large-lot power consumers to cut electricity use by 15 percent compared with peak hour usage last year, the demand in July peaked at 46.27 million kilowatts. So far, there has not been a power crunch.

However, the government has estimated that if the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nos. 2, 3 and 4 reactors do not resume operations, the power supply capacity in the TEPCO service areas will drastically decline to a 560,000-kilowatt shortfall this winter and an 8.07-million-kilowatt shortfall--equivalent to the power the supply capacity of seven or eight reactors--next summer.

TEPCO is hurrying to increase its capacity for gas turbine power generation, but this does not solve the basic problem.

Asked about Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant's No. 1 reactor, Junichi Matsumoto, acting director of TEPCO's Nuclear Power and Plant Siting Division, said, "We want to get it back online.
