Super Bowl 2002
Colts running out of time for another Super Bowl run
ANDERSON, Ind. — It would seem silly to pick nits about a team that has averaged more than a dozen victories since 2002 and has gone to the playoffs for nine consecutive seasons.
Like any team, though, the Indianapolis Colts aren’t perfect. They won the Super Bowl after the ’06 season and went to another Super Bowl after the ’09 season, but their window of opportunity for getting back to another championship game soon may be closing for several reasons.
Peyton’s pain
If he’s not the best quarterback of his era, he’s No. 1A. But things may be starting to catch up to Peyton Manning. He just turned 35, he’s going into his 14th season, and he’s currently recovering from his second neck surgery in 15 months.

No one associated with the Colts seems to know when Manning will be ready to get back on the field, and the practice time he’s missing with the offense could affect his timing and rhythm when the regular season opens on Sept. 11 in Houston, where the Colts lost in last year’s opener.
Aging rosterManning isn’t the only player who’s challenging Father Time. Several of the key players during the team’s successful run this decade are getting older.
Defensive end Dwight Freeney is 31 and entering his 10th season. Wide receiver Reggie Wayne, 32, and right tackle Ryan Diem, 31, are going into their 11th seasons. Center Jeff Saturday, the dean of the offensive line, is 36 and headed into his 13th year. Kicker Adam Vinatieri, 38, has 15 seasons on his resume.
As good as they are, each of those players will have to be replaced sooner than later.
The competitionGiven the stoutness of the Patriots and Jets in the AFC East and the Steelers and Ravens in the AFC North, it’s likely only the AFC South champion will make the playoffs this season.
With a defense expected to be much improved with several new additions, including cornerback Johnathan Joseph, the Texans could challenge the Colts for first place.
And the Colts’ out-of-division schedule is going to be challenging. They must play the Steelers (at home) and the Bucs, Saints, Patriots and Ravens (all on the road).

While it may be next year, or it may be in three years, the Texans will make it to the Super Bowl very soon. They always seem to crack the hated Indianapolis Colts, and if they can just get their defense to hold up on Sundays, they will see great

The 2002 Raiders rose 13 spots in points allowed after bringing back a record-low two starters. The 2001 Rams (31st to 7th) and 2005 Seahawks (22nd to 7th) also showed significant improvement. All three teams made a run to the Super Bowl but lost in

The Patriots, with a healthy Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, have missed the playoffs only once (2002) in the past nine years, and there is no doubt they will playing in January again after this season. The three-time Super Bowl champs still have a sour
Eric Mangini and Damien Woody Join ESPN as NFL Analysts : Sports ...
Hall-of-Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice, former Cleveland Browns and New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini, and 12-year NFL veteran offensive lineman Damien Woody are joining ESPN as a NFL studio analysts.
Sports Illustrated’s Richard Deitsch is reporting that ESPN has hired Jerry Rice as an analyst, with the formal announcement to come later this week. Rice will appear on NFL Live , and other programs throughout the year in addition to contributing analysis on ESPN Radio and other platforms. He is scheduled to start on Wednesday, Aug. 17. A head coach for the last five NFL seasons, Mangini coached the New York Jets from 2006-08 and more recently the Browns (2009-10).
“Eric brings a wealth of knowledge from his experiences as an assistant and a head coach,” said Seth Markman, ESPN senior coordinating producer for NFL studio shows. “Eric is one of the smartest football people I’ve ever been around. Adding him to our roster will enhance our ability to give viewers the best available analysis on the NFL from all angles.”
Mangini, who worked as an ESPN guest analyst during the 2010 NFL playoffs previewing the AFC Divisional Playoff matchup between the Jets and Patriots, added, “I am excited to join the ESPN team for the upcoming season. With my reputation for access and ease with the media, it seems like a natural fit. I am always impressed by how knowledgeable fans are and by their passion to learn more about their team, the league and the strategy of the game, and I hope to add meaningful insight.
“As for my new role, I have been preparing diligently, by picking out tribal tattoos for my lower leg and doing triple shots of espresso to match Herm Edwards’ energy level.”
Woody is joining ESPN as an NFL analyst, and will appear on several studio programs such as SportsCenter, , and ESPNEWS. The two-time Super Bowl winner will make his ESPN debut in September. He announced his retirement from professional football at a press conference last week. He was selected No. 17 overall in the 1999 NFL Draft as a center by the New England Patriots and played for three teams – Patriots (1999 – 2003), Detroit Lions (2004 – 2007), and New York Jets (2008 – 2010) – in 12 NFL seasons. Over 12 seasons, Woody played 173 games, 166 as a starter. He earned two Pro Bowl selections in 2002 and 2004.
“Damien’s play on the field, leadership in the locker room, and understanding of the game, earned him the respect of his peers,” said Seth Markman, ESPN senior coordinating producer for NFL studio shows. “We are pleased to have Damien on our team, and his recent experience as a player will give our viewers a fresh perspective on the game.
