NC photojournalist's work to be exhibited

ELIZABETH CITY

On a February day in 1960, photojournalist Bruce Roberts had just arrived at The Charlotte Observer offices when Life magazine called.

Young blacks were staging a sit-in at the downtown Woolworth's lunch counter to protest whites-only service.

The most famous sit-ins at Woolworth's had begun in Greensboro a day earlier. The practice spread to several North Carolina towns and to other states. Tensions were high, and some store owners were not fond of the media showing up.

"I figured I was going to get thrown out of the store," Roberts, 81, said last week.

He took some quick shots, just in case. When nobody forced him out, he kept taking photos. All remained peaceful in Charlotte that day. A room full of black people remained while he worked.

"It was one of the quietest things I've ever photographed," Roberts said.

More than 50 years later, the work of Roberts, including that photograph for Life, is on display at the Museum of the Albemarle. The exhibit is on loan from the Outer Banks History Center.

Roberts will be in Elizabeth City on Satruday to sign copies of his book "Just Yesterday: North Carolina People and Places."

Besides his time as an award-winning photographer with the Charlotte newspaper, Roberts also has had a long career as a freelancer and once served as photo editor of Southern Living magazine. Twice named Southern Photographer of the Year, he has taken photos of rural North Carolina from the mountains to the Outer Banks, recording history being made and everyday life.

"He was there at the beginning of big changes in the state and he chronicled that change," said Don Pendergraft, chief exhibit designer for the museum.

Among his photos is one of a young Elvis Presley appearing at a National Guard Armory in Tampa, Fla. It was a slow news day, so he was sent to photograph the new singer promoted by Thomas Parker, a friend of the newspaper editor. Parker - aka Colonel Tom - became Presley's longtime manager.

Roberts' favorite and most famous photo is of a young University of North Carolina student consoling a black child on her lap after he had fallen. The woman was working in a day care center in the 1960s as part of a program called the North Carolina Fund. Roberts was there on assignment for Look magazine, he said. The photo was widely published and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
