Union Congregational United Church of Christ of Green Bay celebrates colorful ...

Noteworthy

The Union Congregational United Church of Christ has a long history of being proactive on current issues:
» 1855: Helped a slave family escape to Canada.
» 1880: Provided the first free library in Green Bay.
» 1889: Led Green Bay's anti-saloon campaign.
» 1900s: Published paid circulation scholarly magazines on such topics as sociology, literature, scientific socialism and practical psychology.
» 1950: Started a displaced persons initiative that brought war-scourged families to Green Bay and found homes for them.
» 1970s: Re-energized the Astor historical neighborhood, providing the "green house" for activities for Green Bay teens and helping found the Astor Neighborhood Association, a model for today's neighborhood efforts.
» 1979: Sponsored an early arriving Hmong refugee family brought to Green Bay by the Catholic church.
» 1987: After a visit by Habitat for Humanity founder Millard Fuller at Union, created the current Habitat initiative in Green Bay.
» 1991: With the success of Jubilee House begun in 1989 by the church as a cooperative ministry with The Salvation Army for families in crisis, coordinated a group from other churches to form the Ecumenical Partnership in Housing, which now operates seven such homes.
» 1999: After a decade of soul-searching and study, voted to become an "open and affirming" congregation, welcoming everyone regardless of sexual orientation and offering commitment ceremonies for same-sex couples.
» 2007: With community help, built the Dorothy Waitzman homes near the church to provide low-cost housing.

UCC has had an interesting and colorful history. In the mid-19th century, it helped a slave family escape to Canada and decades later led an anti-saloon campaign in Green Bay. In 1922, it sponsored a speech by an anti-bootleg alcohol prosecutor, and a protester threw a bomb into the church during a Sunday service. (A member threw it back out the door, but suffered minor injuries as it exploded.) In the early years, according to reports stored in the archives at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the church was the site of many trials of its members. Clergy witnessed confessions of wrongdoing, but also gave public admonitions, reflecting strict rules and expectations. Complaints ranged from fraud, falsehood, absence from church, playing billiards and going to a Fourth of July dance. In 1837, a member confessed to fighting a duel. The penalty: being dropped from church membership for a period of time.

Appeal for the Horn of ... - Centenary-Queen Square United Church

The General Council Office of the United Church of Canada has launched an appeal for the Horn of Africa. Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia have experienced a drought year. The food has run out. The lucky ones in Somalia have made a run for the border to Kenya, where food aid is sometimes available in refugee camps. If you are up to walking for around twenty-five days in searing heat and can carry enough water supplies with you, you will make it. If you can’t carry enough water or you can’t walk that far, you die.

This is the worst drought in sixty years, worse than the drought in the eighties that triggered those Live Aid concerts. The refugee camps in Northern Kenya are now growing larger than the largest cities. But just because you made it to a camp doesn’t ensure you’ll survive. The aid agencies are doing the very best they can but they need to feed hundreds of thousands of people. And for that they need money.

Can you manage a donation? If you can give fifty cents, the Government of Canada is matching donations until September 16th, so that is the same as giving a dollar. If you can give five dollars, the matching donation will raise it to ten dollars. Ten dollars can save at least a couple of kids. These people will appreciate anything you can do to help them survive.

This group of forty children and ten adults made it as far as Liboi, just inside the Kenyan border before they ran out of water. Fortunately aid workers were able to come to them there.

How to help? Well, if you write a cheque to “The United Church of Canada” and label it “Emergency Appeal – Horn of Africa” you can leave it at the church and we will see that they get it. If you prefer you could mail it to: The United Church of Canada, 3250 Bloor Street West, Suite 300, Toronto, Ontario, M8X 2Y4.
