Easy ways to conserve water
In the United States, most of us just turn on our taps and the water flows. The supply of clean water seems endless.
In reality, water is a scarce global resource. Only 1 percent of the Earth’s water is stored in readily usable sources. Even though water is renewable, the supply is decreasing faster than it can be replenished.
An average U.S. family uses about 127,000 gallons of water per year. In a year, two loads of laundry per week use 5,000 gallons; one 15-minute shower every other day uses 19,000 gallons; and flushing the toilet 15 times a day uses 33,000 gallons.
Low-flow fixtures can reduce water use and water bills by about one-third.
Consider these tips for conserving water, protecting the environment and saving money.
Fix leaks. Repair leaking faucets, toilet valves and showerheads. When it’s time to replace them, choose WaterSense fixtures (www.epa.gov/Water Sense). You’ll save water and save on your water bill. Leaks in the home can add up to an average of 10,000 gallons of water wasted in a year.
Turn it off. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving. Take shorter showers, and fill tubs halfway or less. Put the stopper in the tub before turning on the water, then adjust the temperature as it fills.
When washing dishes by hand, fill one sink or basin with water to wash and another with water to rinse instead of running the water. Likewise, wash fruits and vegetables in a bowl of water with a vegetable brush rather than under a running faucet.
Fill it up. Run the washing machine and dishwasher with full loads, or set the appropriate water level for your load size. This can save up to 1,000 gallons per month.
Water wisely. Only water your lawn when the soil is dry, and do so early in the morning to minimize evaporation. Mow high (3 to 4 inches), and mulch around plants to retain moisture. Choose native plants and grasses that are suited to local conditions and require less watering.
Make sure sprinklers don’t water the driveway, sidewalk and street, which should be swept rather than hosed down. Also check your sprinklers, outdoor faucets and hoses for leaks. Capture rainwater for use in your garden by placing rain barrels under your gutter downspouts.
Check your bill. Monitor your water bill regularly. If you notice an unexplained increase, check for leaks. If your monthly water usage during the winter months exceeds 12,000 gallons for a family of four, suspect serious leaks.
