Park Series: Max Berg Park is San Clemente Jewel

Created in the 1920s and donated to the city in 1928, Plaza Park was a point of pride with its creator Ole Hanson who used the park to help lure would-be residents to the new costal community of San Clemente. Although Ole Hanson named it Plaza Park, the park was renamed Max Berg Plaza Park in 1985 to honor longtime resident Max Berg, a man who served as city clerk and was named San Clemente’s first Citizen of the Year in 1964. The earliest site plans show the park as an oval shaped area with a large pond and wide-open spaces. As San Clemente has grown, however, the park has seen many additions, subtractions and renovations, but above all, it has remained a well loved and much used recreational space. Mentions of rose gardens and rocket ships will bring smiles of remembrance to the faces of past park users, while the children who enjoy the park today will talk of big trees, monkey bars and swings that fly up into the sky. Brisamar Ramos, 11, says, “I will never stop going to Max Berg Park because it is a special place to me and my family. I like playing soccer at the field because it is fun, and it is my favorite sport. Sometimes, Fun On The Run comes to the park, and I love playing the activities.” Haelynn Marx, 12, and a student at Shorecliffs Middle School, enjoys quieter amenities offered by the park. “My favorite place is the big tree. When I am up there, I overlook the great big ocean, and I feel like I’m going to fall in a luscious green forest. You look up and all you see is thick, green leaves and branches towering over you.” Located at 1100 Calle Puente in the heart of San Clemente, the park is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and is adjacent to Las Palmas Elementary School. The park has playground equipment as well as a small amphitheater. It is a popular park for family picnics and birthday parties. As Jacqueline Marie, a fourth-grader from Las Palmas notes, she “likes Max Berg Plaza Park because since I was little, we’ve had birthday parties there. When I have them there, my cousins and I always fight for the big slide. My friends and I have races in the big field. For this reason, Max Berg Plaza Park is my favorite park in San Clemente.
