Meramec: Year of the Cuts
Although faculty will not be cut altogether, there may certainly be an intention to change the academic modus operandi of the institution. Denise Chachere, former trustee of the college, said in an article in the student newspaper , that the college could be looking at options such as providing midnight classes or increasing the number of part-time faculty in order to offset the budget cuts. "We are grateful for the governor and the legislators for providing us the funds that they have," Wasson said. "We understand these are difficult times, but we also hope as the economy recovers and tax revenues start coming back in at higher levels, that we will be considered first to have our funding resumed."Carlos Restrepo is a freelance journalist for Patch.com. National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6 and ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. The week’s activities focus on the contributions of the nation’s registered nurses and provide educational opportunities for the public to learn about the role nurses play in meeting the diverse health care needs of America Students currently enrolled in the nursing program range in age from 20 through 60-plus; 92 percent of these students attend college part time. The college admits more than 230 students per academic year. At any given time there are more than 450 students enrolled in the program. The college employs 32 full-time faculty and 32 part-time instructors who all have practical experience as registered nurses. "St. Louis Community College's nursing program is a very strong, dynamic and challenging program that prepares our graduates for the multi-faceted world of being a registered nurse," said Karen Mayes, STLCC's director of nursing education. "Our dedicated faculty are very supportive of our students and offer quality instruction that is financially, academically and geographically accessible to students.
