State should keep vet counseling going

With war veterans facing a host of psychological issues, counseling hotline should be maintained.

We applaud a contingent of South Jersey legislators, including retiring Assemblyman Jack Conners -- a longtime advocate for military veterans -- for their efforts to secure funding for a peer counseling program for war veterans suffering mental and emotional problems.

Legislation sponsored by Conners, D-Pennsauken, along with fellow Democratic South Jersey lawmakers Sens. Fred Madden and Jim Beach and Assemblyman Paul Moriarty, would ensure more permanent funding from the state for Vet-2-Vet. It's a toll-free confidential help line that works as one form of early intervention for veterans returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan who struggle with psychological distress and need help reintegrating back into civilian life.

Vet-2-Vet trains mostly combat veterans to serve as volunteer counselors and field calls from military veterans who call in need of immediate help.

The mental health issues faced by returning veterans are many: anxiety, depression, aggression and post-traumatic stress, among others.

Sadly, suicide rates among soldiers who've served in combat are far higher than suicide rates for the general population.

The Army Times reported last year that, on average, there are about 950 suicide attempts each month from veterans who receive some type of treatment from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Of those, about 7 percent succeed in killing themselves. And 11 percent who don't die try killing themselves again within nine months.

During the 12-month period of October 2008 through September 2009 there were 1,621 suicide attempts by men and 247 by women who served in Iraq or Afghanistan, with 94 men and four women dying.

Beyond suicide, there have been an inordinate number of veterans who've returned from combat and ended up committing crimes, including violent acts of aggression such as assault and murder. As with suicides, many of these acts have been found to be tied directly to veterans' mental health and the psychological scars they bear from having endured the incredible stress of combat.

As our troops return home from Iraq and Afghanistan, it is so important that we do more than just give them our heartfelt thanks. The sacrifices they've made, and the toll that combat service has taken on them, warrants not just attention paid to their physical ailments, but to their psychological ailments, as well.

Whether you are in a difficult marriage that you are trying to save or if you are in one that is coming to an end, it is a tough place to be and the challenges can be overwhelming. Maybe you are at a point at which only one of you want to work things out and the other does not. Of, if you both want to seek solutions to the problems and difficulties that are keeping you from having the best relationship you can have, you just do not know where to find the answers you are looking for. Whatever your situation may be, I hope that you may find some answers, tips, advice or resources somewhere in this website and that the information may help to guide you in your quest for answers. Many people have questions regarding marriage counseling and couples counseling. Should they begin by going together or individually? Who is the most qualified therapist or counselor? Can their problems be solved or is it just too late? Many times, it seems hopeless and I have asked myself at times, can my own marriage be saved or are we both at the point at which there is no longer any room for forgiveness and are our past resentments too big to find a way around them? The short answer is in most, if not all marriages, yes. I truly feel that any relationship can be improved dramatically as long as both people want to improve it and if they are both willing to work together as a couple and work individually on their issues. It takes someone on the outside to be there as an un-biased mediator and counselor to weed through what is what and who is responsible for what part of the issues that cause difficulties. I wish you the best as you and your partner or spouse travel this difficult road.
