Ruby creator's Heroku move boosts Salesforce.com developer ambitions
Yukihiro "Matz" Matsumoto, creator of the Ruby programming language, has joined Salesforce.com's Heroku platform-as-a-service company as chief architect of Ruby.
Since its public release in 1995, Ruby runs many of the world’s most popular brands, from Comcast and Best Buy to AT&T’s Yellow Pages, Hulu and Twitter, while Heroku powers more than 150,000 apps written by Ruby developers. Ruby is the language upon which Heroku was founded on. On the Heroku official blog, the firm could barely conceal how pleased it was with this coup:
“ In 1993, a time when most programming languages were focussed on computational efficiency, Matz wanted to create a language focussed on developer experience, happiness, and productivity. This insight was years ahead of the trend toward agile software methodologies (the Agile Software Manifesto, for example, was published in 2001). With this unique intention, Matz created a beautiful and elegant language that has steadily grown a passionate following, becoming wildly popular in recent years, partially thanks to David Heinemeier Hansson's Ruby on Rails web framework. Ruby has a strong community and is a true open-source collaborative effort with hundreds of contributors. Matz has driven Ruby's design as a language, as well as the most widely used Ruby implementation (MRI), and will continue to do so in his role at Heroku, along with a small team of Ruby's core committers. “ As a member of our platform development team, Matsumoto-san will continue his work on the Ruby language in close collaboration with the Ruby community, keeping the language open and advancing the technology in exciting new ways. Matz will further accelerate innovation for Ruby and make it even friendlier for developers to build world-class apps. “ Heroku was designed from the start to support multiple languages, and we hope to be soon be talking about our strategy in offering many, many languages in the cloud using the Heroku capability. We believe Force.com and Heroku will attract a diverse community of developers and partners who want to create Cloud 2 apps, and it's already happening. This guide will help developers to build secure applications irrespective of any specific scripting language used. In this paper I will try to focus on some of the fundamental parameters of application security, which if properly followed through out the whole SDLC, can help developers and administrators immensely to meet industry application security standards like OWASP or WASC etc.
Input Validation:
Conduct all data validation on trusted system (server side validation)
Identify all data sources and classify them into trusted and untrusted. Validate all data from untrusted sources (e.g: Databases,File Streams, etc.)
There should be centralized input validation routine for the application.
Specify proper character sets, such as UTF-8, for all sources of input
Encode data to a common character set before validating
All validation failures should result in input rejection
Determine if the system supports UTF-8 extended character sets and if so, validate after UTF-8 decoding is completed.
Validate all client provided data before processing, including all parameters, URLs and HTTP header content (e.g. Cookies names and values).Be sure to include automated post backs from JavaScript, Flash or other embedded code.
Verify the header values in both requests ans responses contain only ASCII characters.
Validate data from redirects (An attacker may submit malicious content directly to the target of the redirect, thus circumventing application logic and any validation perform before the redirect)
Validate for expected data types
Validate data range
Validate data length
Validate all input against a “white” list of allowed characters, whenever possible.
If any potential hazardous characters must be allowed as input, be sure that you implement additional controls like output encoding, secure task specific APIs and accounting for the utilization of that data throughout the application.
